From Access to Integration: The Evolution of Our Letchworth Partnership

Updated: 2 days ago

Since 2019, Arts for Learning WNY has had the privilege of partnering with Letchworth Central School District to bring meaningful arts experiences to students and teachers. What began as a series of individual opportunities has grown into something much deeper: a sustained, school-wide commitment to arts integration.

In those early years, students benefited from powerful moments of exposure to high-quality arts experiences. For example, cultural partner the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra visited the district to lead workshops, and students attended live orchestral performances - experiences that, for many, would not have otherwise been accessible. These moments laid an important foundation, sparking curiosity and engagement.

By the 2023-2024 school year, that foundation had evolved into a more comprehensive partnership as Letchworth joined Arts for Learning WNY’s Whole School Partnership program. This shift marked a significant step forward, moving from one-time events to an embedded, collaborative approach that integrates the arts into everyday learning.

Today, the partnership primarily engages students in grades 7 through 11, with a strong focus on English Language Arts classrooms. Teaching Artists work alongside educators to bring creative approaches into core instruction, helping students connect more deeply with content while building critical thinking and communication skills. Students explore poetry through creative expression and use music as a lens to analyze The Great Gatsby, offering innovative ways to engage with literature while deepening their understanding of theme, tone, and historical context.

Importantly, the partnership extends beyond the classroom to support educators as well. Through coordinated professional development, teachers are equipped with practical strategies to integrate the arts into their instruction. A recent session, led by Paige Whelan of Focus 5 Inc, brought together English Language Arts and Social Studies teachers to explore how visual arts can support argumentative writing, using artwork as evidence alongside traditional texts. This approach aligns with Letchworth’s commitment to cross-curricular learning, strengthening connections between disciplines and enriching the student experience.

What makes this partnership particularly meaningful is its responsiveness. Programming is not one-size-fits-all; it is shaped by the needs of the school community. This year, that also included the development of sessions focused on self-care and arts-integrated, trauma-informed practices - an intentional effort to support both student well-being and classroom culture.

"It's not treated as an add-on,

but as a meaningful part of how teaching and learning happen across classrooms."

As Allison, Arts for Learning’s Director of Programs, shares, what sets Letchworth apart is the depth of engagement across the school community: “There’s a real openness at Letchworth, from both teachers and leadership, to try new approaches and fully embrace arts integration. It’s not treated as an add-on, but as a meaningful part of how teaching and learning happen across classrooms.”

Over time, the relationship between Arts for Learning WNY and Letchworth Central School has grown into a true collaboration - one rooted in trust, shared goals, and a belief in the power of the arts to enhance education. We are not only expanding access to the arts, but also embedding creativity into the fabric of learning.

"Their connections to themselves and the characters within the novel we were reading were something I had never seen before — it was a wonderful experience for all of us."

As one Letchworth educator shared, the impact of this work is evident in how students engage with both the material and their own creativity: “The Teaching Artist and I worked together to ensure each lesson met required standards while using out-of-the-box approaches to help students express themselves. Students had the opportunity to draw, paint, and work in mediums they don’t typically experience in an ELA classroom. Their connections to themselves and the characters within the novel we were reading were something I had never seen before - it was a wonderful experience for all of us.”

-Kara Bonn, High School English Teacher & ELA Department Chairperson

This partnership continues to grow and evolve, and we are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Letchworth Central School District in creating meaningful, lasting impact through the arts.
